The teacher took to Reddit to share her frustrations with some kids in her class.

"I’ve been with the same class since 2nd grade. Next year will be my fifth year with them as their teacher. They’ll be starting in the 6th grade.

Before these past 2-3 months I’ve never heard any of them say anything about wanting another teacher. During Christmas I even got some gifts and (more importantly) a few letters about how they love having me as their teacher and how great I am.

During the last 2-3 months (especially the last month) about 4-5 out of my 18 students have been talking pretty openly about how they are disappointed that I’m also their teacher next year. Idk if it’s relevant, but all of them are girls. Girls that can be a handful at times, but most would describe them as students that are pretty easy to deal with."

Some of the comments her students have made are pretty harsh.

  • "Them telling other teachers that they wish they were their teacher.
  • Overhearing them talking about how they are dissatisfied that they don’t get to have a new teacher.
  • 2-3 of them said to me that they were disappointed that I was not sick longer, so that they could have another teacher, after being away from work for 2-3 days.
  • Just today they told their subject teacher that it’s unfair that other classes get to switch up teachers but not them. That I don’t give them enough breaks outside during lessons "

Other teachers pointed out that it's probably not personal, and the kids likely just want a change of pace.

“That’s a long time. Generally it’s not recommended to loop with students more than 2 years in the US. These kids have been with you from early elementary to tween. It is totally developmentally appropriate for them to want a change of pace. Try not to take it personally. ”

Honestly, it isn't anything personal. It's just every year their siblings and friends will be excited about new changes and new beginnings / fresh starts. It's part of the schooling journey and it's only naturally going to feel to them that they aren't getting that experience.

How would you feel if your child had the same teacher from 2nd grade to 6th grade? Would you request a change of pace?
